My nephew, on the merits of chocolate milk.
Who doesn't love chocolate milk?!
Have a great weekend!

Great day to be alive (to be said in an Irish brogue)
The other day Keeley and I headed to Malibu.
Socks with sandals. The cool way.
75 degrees and sunny on a January day, can't beat it. (just rubbing it in to all my Chicago friends)
After the beach we stopped at the Reel Inn. I always stop here after surfing. This is probably my favorite place for seafood in LA because it's so beachy and relaxed and still really really really good. And they have great beer on tap.
Keeley: Red dress is from the flea market on Melrose and Fairfax. Sandals are Prada. Sunglasses are Ray Ban. Socks unknown.
Me: Top and skirt from Urban Outfitters. Necklace by Anthropologie.

The Lover's Dictionary
I'm currently reading The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan. It is equal parts funny and sad, but wholly true.
The story is written through dictionary entries and definitions of the words. It's a beautifully creative read. The following excerpt really hit home to me and my life right now. By the last line I realized there were tears streaming down my face.

recant, v.
I want to take back at least half of the "I love you"s, because I didn't mean them as much as the other ones. I want to take back the book of artsy photos I gave you, because you didn't get it and said it was hipster trash. I want to take back what I said about you being an emotional zombie. I want to take back the time I called you "honey" in front of your sister and you looked like I had just shown her pictures of us having sex. I want to take back the wineglass I broke when I was mad, because it was a nice wineglass and the argument would have ended anyway. I want to take back the time we had sex in a rent-a-car, not because I feel bad about the people who got the car after us, but because it was massively uncomfortable. I want to take back the trust I had while you were away in Austin. I want to take back the time I said you were a genius, because I was being sarcastic and I should have just said you'd hurt my feelings. I want to take back the secrets I told you so I can decide now whether to tell them to you again. I want to take back the piece of me that lies in you to see if I truly miss it. I want to take back at least half the "I love you"s, because it feels safer that way.

Look at all these green dresses!
Not feeling so bad about the green piece of tin I drive around LA.
(photo taken somewhere between Texas and LA. One of those states with post-apocalyptic landscapes where people call a series of rocks a garden)

Keeley: Dress is Topshop. Shoes are from Red or Dead. Red coat is thrifted. Bag is from Thailand, knockoff Louis Vuitton we think. Necklace from H&M. Red lipstick is Chanel. (Last pic of Keeley is from a different night. :P)
Me: Dress and rope belt are from Paper Doll on Melrose. Grey blazer from Urban Outfitters. Brooch courtesy of my Grandma Anne. (She owned the mink coat too. She was classy.) Black tights are DKNY. Shoes are Bakers from years and years ago. Watch is a men's style by Oakley (caught that deal on Steep and Cheap). Red purse from a vintage shop on the north side of Chicago...can't remember the name.

Set of ten black picture frames from Urban Outfitters. I ordered these from Urban's online store as soon as I got my own studio but just finally put them up a couple of months ago. They hang above my bed and are filled with pictures I've taken in Europe, Africa and the U.S. You can find them here!

I'm pretty obsessed with my friend Keeley Hazell's clothes. Here's a quick outfit I'd like to share.
Just off to the dry cleaners and to pick up some lunch.
Her jeans are by Religion Clothing out of London (not the same as True Religion). And the shoes are thrifted from Crossroads.
Blue shirt is YSL. Tweed cartigan from Topshop. And black blazer by Vince.

Good breakup songs. Because I'm in that mood.
You Don't Know Me (feat. Regina Spektor) by Ben Folds
Gonna Get Along Without You Now by She & Him
Breakups are good though. They bring about games like "How many guys can I give my number to in one night". Which inevitably lead to games like "How many numbers can I list under 'don't answer' in my phone".

Beet Soup
This weekend I made beet soup. And it was so delicious and red that I took pictures of it. Plus it's super easy to make.
Ingredients:
-4 to 5 organic beets the size of a fist (peeled and cut into discs)
-2 organic carrots (peeled and chopped)
-1 quart organic beef broth
-1 cup organic noodles (I used fusilli)
-up to 2 cups organic sour cream
-salt and pepper to taste
Peel the beets and boil them in water. Add salt.
While the beets are boiling, peel and chop the carrots.
When the beets are done (you can stick a fork all the way through them) take them out and cut them into bite size pieces. Then put them back in and add the carrots and one quart of beef broth.
After a while add some noodles but not too many. About a half cup to a cup.
Lastly, add the sour cream. I like lots of sour cream because, duh, it tastes delicious but add it however you prefer. Add a little bit to the whole pot, then add as you like to each specific bowl.
Voila!
And a little sourdough bread and butter. Always good.
Disclaimer: What goes in red will come out red. Don't be alarmed.
